Brief Introduction of Professor Zhentang Zhao
Zhentang Zhao is a particle accelerator scientist and an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. He graduated from Tsinghua University with Ph.D degree and came to Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) in 1990, then he has worked successively in three CAS institutes, Institute of High Energy Physics (IHEP), Shanghai Institute of Applied Physics (SINAP) and Shanghai Advanced Research Institute (SARI). He was the director general of SINAP. Currently he is the Vice Director of SARI, Chairman of the Academic Committee of SARI, Director of the Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility (SSRF), and Director of the Shanghai Mega Science Center of the CAS.
He has been engaged in particle accelerator research and facility development since early 1980s, exploring new accelerator concepts, developing frontier technologies, as well as designing and constructing new light sources. He worked as deputy project director of SSRF in charge of the SSRF accelerator design and construction from 1998 to 2010, and now he has been working as project director of the SSRF Phase II Project since 2012. In the meantime, he was working as chief scientist or project leader of 3 free electron laser facilities in the spectra range from ultraviolet to soft X-ray and the first synchrotron based proton therapy facility made in China.
He has served successively as the chief scientist of the 973 project, the leader of national key research and development project, and members of the international advisory committees of 9 large accelerator facilities in Japan, South Korea, Brazil and other countries. He is currently the executive member of the Chinese Nuclear Society and the Chinese Physical Society.
